Serving Those Who Served: My Story with a 97-Year-Young Marine
Nestled in the heart of Ontario, California, Purple Easel is more than just a paint and sip studio—it’s a place where stories unfold, where laughter echoes, and where creativity knows no age. Recently, we had the honor of hosting a truly special guest: a 97-year-old Marine who reminded us of the profound impact art can have, regardless of life’s challenges.
A Surprise Visit
The evening had already begun when a woman approached me with a question: “Is it too late to join?” With a welcoming smile, I assured her, “Of course, no problem at all.” Little did I know, she was a caretaker for a remarkable 97-year-old Marine veteran. As we chatted while setting up their space, I learned that his hearing was nearly gone, making events that rely heavily on auditory instruction a challenge. However, we at Purple Easel are nothing if not accommodating and ready to create a win-win experience for everyone.
Overcoming Challenges with Creativity
Painting at our Ontario paint studio often requires following along with instructions. Even with our instructors mic’d, it was clear that our new friend was struggling to hear. But that didn’t deter us. I took it upon myself to transcribe the steps and demonstrate them on the table paper, ensuring he could follow along at his own pace. With each brushstroke, I wrote encouraging notes, validating his efforts and reminding him that his painting was coming along beautifully.
Sharing Stories and Smiles
As the evening unfolded, the Marine shared snippets of his life with me. He talked about his time in the Marines, showed pictures of his daughter who followed in his footsteps in the 1960s, and spoke of his love for music and the guitar. His stories were a testament to a life well-lived and served as a reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences that each of our guests brings to Purple Easel.
A Memorable Farewell
What could have been a frustrating experience turned into a memorable evening filled with connection and creativity. As our guests departed, the Marine’s smile was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. It’s moments like these that make our paint and sip experiences so incredibly rewarding and meaningful.
