The Science of a Starry Night

We often draw a line between science and the arts. But sometimes, the two converge in a way that helps us better understand our world. Van Gogh’s iconic painting, Starry Night, is one of the most widely recognized and reproduced images in the world, and is even a favorite recreation among Purple Easel painters. But what you may not know about Starry Night is how it also manages to represent the complex theory of turbulent flow, one of the most difficult to understand mathematically and hardest for our minds to comprehend. It goes to show that sometimes what can’t be explained in words or numbers is best expressed through art. To learn more about Van Gogh’s uncanny representation, check out this TED-ed video here.
